Internet Policy in the MENA Region: Research Methods for Advocates

The Annenberg School for Communication’s Internet Policy Observatory has teamed up with Citizen Lab, ASL19, and Kadir Has University’s New Media Department to develop an Internet Policy Research Methods Workshop. This program will bring together young scholars and activists working in digital rights and the internet policy space in an intensive four day practicum that provides a survey of both qualitative and quantitative, online and offline research methods with the goal of enhancing and advancing their advocacy efforts.

Lucy Purdon, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Project Manager, joined IHRB in 2012 as a researcher on the European Commission ICT Sector Guide on Implementing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Lucy Purdon will present findings and recommendations to both governments and companies from her case study, including highlights from on-the-ground research conducted during one particular shutdown in Islamabad in March 2015.

Benchmarking Demand for Internet Freedom: Reviewing Insights from Russia, Turkey, and Pakistan

Dr. Erik Nisbet, Associate Professor at The Ohio State University, and Dr. Olga Kamenchuk, Director on Director on International and Public Affairs at VCIOM, will discuss some key insights, based on data collected in Russia, Turkey, and Pakistan, on citizen attitudes and behaviors associated with internet freedom in each country and how public opinion patterns about internet censorship may converge or differ across cases.
